The Scallion Ater Project

The Scallion Ater project took off!  Led by Artist Michael Fortune local residents of The Tullow Road area took ownership over Carlovians being called Scallion Aters which coincided with the wonderful achievement of Carlow in the GAA – Michael designed a logo and badges. Michael along with local residents worked from the Library in Carlow, and with the schools in the local area to sow scallion seeds over the summer, local residents pitched the ideas also at the national event Bloom in the Phoenix Park thanks to Carlow Tourism and with Carlow Regional Youth Services John Sweeney Park House after schools group and Take A Part Carlow were pitched up with the Scallion Ater project at the Kandle event in Carlow College grounds with thanks to Chris, Mary and Lisa the seeds were well sown in the area to take ownership of the Scallion Ater again!!

Celebrating Carlow Scallions with History, Music and Song

If you are free on Saturday the 28th of November, why not join artist/folklorist Michael Fortune for a public presentation on ZOOM where you will hear all about The Scallion Ater Project which he has been working on in Carlow since 2018. The project has reached many people in the county and was commissioned by Arts Office of Carlow County Council in collaboration with Take A Part Carlow.


The project has touched thousands of people in different ways and 100’s of homes around Carlow have grown scallions as part of this. The presentation will offer a chance to reflect on this work and feature photos, films and anecdotes about the project and the community involvement. You will also be treated to some side-orders of tunes and songs from some of Carlow’s finest musicians and singers. If you are free and interested in hearing about the project join them on Saturday from 1-2pm on ZOOM.
